Geographical search
When to use the geographical search
The geographical search allows you to search for Cases or Breaches using location information, where:
- the offence took place in a specific Region
- it was taken forward by a specific HSE Division
- the offence took place in a specific Country
- you know the town/city or the postcode where the offence took place

How to access the geographical search
Select the Geographical search link from the Homepage.
How to perform a geographical search
If you want to search for Cases or Breaches, by geographic area, then you need to use the Geographical Search.
This allows you to search for Cases or Breaches where:
- the offence took place in a specific Region (e.g. North West) or
- taken forward by a specific HSE Division (e.g. Midlands) or
- the offence took place in a specific Country (e.g. Scotland, England or Wales)
You can also use the geographical search to find cases or breached using town/city or the postcode where the offence took place.
When selecting Geographical search from the Homepage you are automatically directed to a standard search for Cases by Country.
You can then:
- select the country by clicking on the map i.e. England, Scotland, or Wales
- or click on the links provided below the map
A Case list is then displayed showing the records which match the Country you selected i.e. England, Scotland, Wales.
Case list
What information appears on the Case list?
Whatever search criteria you use, the list will always display the same information:
- Case Number
- Defendant's Name
- Offence Date
- Local Authority
- Main Activity
At the top of the page it also displays the number of results, and pages of information, matching the search. There are a maximum of 10 records per page.
How to select a case from the list
- Click on the unique Case Number
- If the Case you require does not appear on the first page - click on the page number link at the bottom of the page to view the other pages
How to re-sort the case hit list
You can re-sort any of the following columns:
- Case Number
- Defendant's Name
- Offence Date
- Local Authority
- Main Activity
To do this, simply select one of the above column names from the drop down list and click ‘Sort’.This will then display the cases in the new sort order.
If you selected Case what information appears on the list?

Breach list
If you selected Breach what information is displayed on the list
For each Breach, you will see:
- Case/Breach Number
- Defendant's Name
- Hearing Date
- Result
- Fine
- Act or Regulation
It also displays the number of results that match your search criteria e.g. "3 Matching results found.
How to select a breach from the list
The Breach Number uniquely identifies the Breach. It contains the Case number and Breach I.D. For more details click on the breach link.
How to re-sort the breach list
You can re-sort any of the following columns:
- Case/Breach Number
- Defendant's Name
- Hearing Date
- Act or Regulation
To do this, simply select one of the above column names from the drop down list and click go
The will then refresh to display the cases in the new sort order.
The Breach Detail screen contains the full description of the selected breach:
- case and breach number
- who was prosecuted i.e. Defendant’s Detail
- at which court
- what was the fine
- what was the breach result
- which case is the breach associated with
- which other breaches were involved
- where the offence took place
- which part of HSE took the case
There are links available on the Breach detail which gives you more information:
- Defendant – by clicking on the defendant name you can see defendant’s name, address, status and HSE reference
- Case details – you can see detail of the case related to the Breach
- Other breaches in this case – by selecting this link you can see if there are other Breaches for this case
Other ways to search geographical information
You must decide whether you want to find cases or breaches. However, cases and related breaches are linked within the system so you can easily move between the details on either.
When you have decided on your search criteria:
- Select Cases or Breaches
- Click ‘Set’
The criteria is then set and will dictate any further search until it is changed i.e. case to breach/breach to case.
You can then find information by Country, Divisions, Region, Town or City.
The following examples will display the results of a 'Cases search'.
Country
HSE Divisions
- Scotland - Covers all the Scottish unitary authorities and island councils
- Yorkshire and North East - Covers the counties of Cleveland, Durham, North Yorkshire, Northumberland, West Yorkshire, Tyne & Wear, Humberside and South Yorkshire.
- North West - Covers the counties of Cheshire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Merseyside
- Midlands - Covers the counties of West Midlands, Leicestershire, Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, Derbyshire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire, Hereford and Worcester
- Wales and West - Covers Wales, Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, North Somerset, Bath and North East Somerset, Gloucestershire, South Gloucestershire, Bristol, Dorset, Swindon and Wiltshire
- London and the South East - Covers the counties of Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hampshire, Hertfordshire, Isle of Wight, Norfolk, Suffolk, Oxfordshire, Kent, East & West Sussex and Surrey

- Click Search
Depending whether you selected Cases or Breaches involving a defendant, a list is returned.
